This allele, which encodes pleiotrophin protein, plays a role in mitogenesis for endothelial, epithelial, and fibroblast cells and neurite outgrowth. Further, aberrations of the gene result in allelic variants that are implicated in tumor invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis.
